Spring Bronze vs Interlocking Weatherstripping: Which Is Better?

Interlocking gives the best seal; spring bronze is easier. If your door already has interlocking strips, replace them with interlocking.

How each one works

  • Spring bronze is one flexible strip nailed to the jamb. The door presses it as it closes and it springs back when the door opens.
  • Interlocking uses two metal profiles, one on the door and one on the frame or threshold, that hook together when the door closes.

Choose spring bronze when

  • You want a durable metal seal without cutting kerfs in the door.
  • The gap is 1/16" to 3/16".
  • The door swells and shrinks a lot with the seasons.
  • You're doing it yourself. One-door kit · install guide

Choose interlocking when

  • You want the best seal against wind and rain.
  • The door already has interlocking strips or a hook at the bottom.
  • You can kerf the door accurately (or hire it out). Install interlocking after the door has acclimated, because adjusting it later means pulling it and re-installing.
  • Parts: L-strip, J-hook strip, bronze thresholds, kerfing saw.
