How to Replace Interlocking Weatherstripping on an Old Door
Share
If the old interlocking strips are bent, missing or worn out, you can usually replace them and reuse the existing kerfs and rabbets in the door. First check whether you need to replace everything; sometimes the original is worth saving.
1. Identify what you have
Photograph the door edge, jamb, head and sill with the door open. Note whether there is an L-shaped strip on the sides and head and a hook strip on the bottom engaging a metal threshold. Old strips may be bronze or zinc; bronze and zinc perform the same, bronze is chosen for looks.
2. Align the door first
Interlocking only works when the door is square in the opening. Do the 1-minute door alignment check.
3. Remove the old strips
Pull the nails and lift the strips out carefully so you don't split the wood. Clean the kerf or rabbet to bare, flat wood.
4. Fit the new pieces
- Sides and head: interlocking L-strip. Cut to length and nail in place.
- Door bottom: bronze J-hook strip, set in a rabbet so it engages the threshold. See replacing a damaged hook strip.
- Sill: if the threshold is worn out, replace it with a bronze interlocking threshold.
- Tools: kerfing saw if kerfs need recutting.
5. Test
Close the door slowly several times. It should latch without force and the strips should engage without scraping. If something rubs, recheck alignment before re-nailing.
Common questions
Can I reuse the old kerfs when replacing interlocking weatherstripping?
Usually yes. Remove the old strips carefully, clean the kerf or rabbet to bare flat wood, and fit new strips of the same profile.
What parts replace old interlocking weatherstripping?
An interlocking L-strip for the sides and head, a bronze J-hook strip for the door bottom, and an interlocking bronze threshold if the sill is worn out.
