Which Baldwin 5399 Thumbpiece Repair Kit Do I Need?

Use four checks to choose the correct Baldwin 5399 thumbpiece repair kit without replacing the whole handleset.

The suffix matters: G, H, K, M and N fit different applications.

1. Is the door fixed or operating?

Fixed or full dummy: the handleset is matching trim and does not retract a latch. Choose Baldwin 5399.K. It works with an inside knob or lever.

Operating door: the thumbpiece retracts a latch. Continue to Step 2.

2. Is there a knob or lever on the inside?

Inside knob: your result will be 5399.G or 5399.M.

Inside lever: your result will be 5399.H or 5399.N.

3. Test for emergency egress

Lock the deadbolt while the door is open, then turn the inside knob or lever.

  • If the inside trim retracts both the latch and the deadbolt together, you have emergency egress.
  • If the deadbolt must be unlocked separately, you have standard operation.

Your Baldwin 5399 repair kit

  • 5399.G — operating door, inside knob, standard operation
  • 5399.H — operating door, inside lever, standard operation
  • 5399.K — fixed full-dummy door, inside knob or lever
  • 5399.M — operating door, inside knob, emergency egress
  • 5399.N — operating door, inside lever, emergency egress

4. Choose the finish

Open the correct kit above, then choose the Baldwin finish that matches your existing hardware. Older hardware can darken, wear or develop a patina, so a new part may not look exactly the same at first.

Before you order

These kits are for Baldwin Estate tubular handlesets. A tubular set normally has separate latch and deadbolt components on the door edge. A mortise lock has one larger rectangular lock body recessed into the edge.

Still not sure?

Send Classic Door a clear photo of the outside handleset, the inside knob or lever, and the full edge of the open door. We can confirm the important details before you order.
