Cherry Old World Concentrated Stain for matching old wood. A rich, dark red. It's a tung oil stain loaded with aniline dye, made with a restoration palette so a new part can match the old wood around it.
Good for
- Matching a repaired or replaced piece to old woodwork.
- Giving new wood an aged color.
- Interior doors, trim, furniture and floors.
How to use it
- Test on scrap of the same wood first.
- Use it full strength for deep color, or thin it with Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer for a lighter tone.
- Colors can be mixed or layered to hit a tricky match.
- Allow 12 to 24 hours dry time per coat.
- Topcoat with a clear finish. This stain is not a finish on its own.
Good to know
- For interior finishing. Outdoors, use it only for maintenance touch-ups.
- Larger 1 and 3 gallon pails are made to order. Ask us.
- Rags soaked with oil finish can catch fire on their own. Lay them flat outside to dry or keep them in a sealed can of water.
Common questions
Do I need a topcoat?
Yes. It colors and seals the wood but needs a clear tung oil or varnish over it.
Why does my new wood stain differently from the old?
New wood takes stain unevenly. Sutherland Welles Oxidizer ages new wood first so the stain absorbs more like the old wood.
What size should I buy?
Start with the 4 oz sample to test the color. A quart covers most door and trim projects.
Use it with
- Sutherland Welles Oxidizer for new wood.
- Old World Stain Sample Kit to test colors.
- A clear tung oil or Murdoch's topcoat.
