A thin, penetrating tung oil for the first coats on bare wood. Use it to seal new or stripped wood before your topcoats, or on its own where you want almost no sheen: beams, mantels, timber frames, paneling, trim and porous stone.
Good for
- First coats under a lustre topcoat.
- Low-sheen finish on beams, mantels, ceilings and timber frames.
- Porous stone and brick.
- Thinning Old World Concentrated Stain for a lighter color.
How to use it
- Sand and clean the wood.
- Apply a thin coat by rag, brush, short-nap synthetic roller or HVLP sprayer.
- Wipe off anything that doesn't soak in.
- Wait at least 24 hours between coats.
- Apply between 55 and 75°F with humidity at 65% or lower.
Coverage and lifespan
- About 600 sq ft per gallon for the first coat on new wood, 800 for the second, and 1,000 for the third and fourth.
- Plan on a maintenance coat every 3 to 5 years.
About this formula
- Botanical line: thinned with DiCitrusol, a citrus-based solvent. No petroleum solvents and low VOC.
- Interior use only.
- Listed by Sutherland Welles as GREENGUARD Gold certified.
Safety
- Rags soaked with oil finish can catch fire on their own. Lay them flat outside to dry or keep them in a sealed can of water.
Common questions
Can I use the sealer by itself?
Yes. It leaves a natural, low sheen. Add a lustre coat on top if you want more build or shine.
Why use a sealer first?
It soaks deep into the wood and gives the topcoats something to bond to.
Is it food safe?
Sutherland Welles lists it as food safe after a full 30-day cure.
Use it with
- Tung Oil Sealer for the first coats on bare wood.
- A natural china bristle brush.
- Tung Oil Polish and Wood Cleaner for upkeep.
