A hand-rubbed tung oil finish for interior wood, medium lustre. It soaks into the wood and cures hard, so the grain shows through instead of sitting under a plastic film. Sheen builds with each coat; plan on about four.
Good for
- Interior doors, trim, paneling and built-ins.
- Furniture and floors.
- Refinishing stripped woodwork in old houses.
How to use it
- Sand and clean the wood.
- Apply a thin coat by rag, brush, short-nap synthetic roller or HVLP sprayer.
- Wipe off anything that doesn't soak in.
- Wait at least 24 hours between coats.
- Apply between 55 and 75°F with humidity at 65% or lower.
Coverage and lifespan
- About 600 sq ft per gallon for the first coat on new wood, 800 for the second, and 1,000 for the third and fourth.
- Plan on a maintenance coat every 3 to 5 years.
About this formula
- Botanical line: thinned with DiCitrusol, a citrus-based solvent. No petroleum solvents and low VOC.
- Interior use only.
- Listed by Sutherland Welles as GREENGUARD Gold certified.
Safety
- Rags soaked with oil finish can catch fire on their own. Lay them flat outside to dry or keep them in a sealed can of water.
Common questions
How many coats do I need?
About four. Each coat adds sheen and protection.
Can I touch it up later?
Yes. It's spot repairable: clean the area and wipe on another coat.
How is medium lustre made?
It's the high lustre finish cut about 1 part solvent to 3 parts finish, so it goes on thinner and dries to a softer sheen.
Is it food safe?
Sutherland Welles lists it as food safe after a full 30-day cure.
Use it with
- Tung Oil Sealer for the first coats on bare wood.
- A natural china bristle brush.
- Tung Oil Polish and Wood Cleaner for upkeep.
