Door Hinge Screw Size

Most residential door hinges use #9 or #10 flat head wood screws. A standard 3-1/2" interior door hinge usually takes #9 x 3/4" to 1" screws. Heavier 4" and 4-1/2" exterior door hinges usually take #10 or #12 screws. Old hinges vary, so measure the screw you have with the chart above, or match the hinge holes: the screw head should sit flush in the countersink.

How to Use the Brass Screw Size Chart

  1. Gauge: match the screw shank to the gauge (#0 to #14).
  2. Length: measure flat heads from the top of the head to the tip, oval heads from the edge where the head meets the surface to the tip, and round heads from under the head to the tip.
  3. Head and drive: flat, oval, or round head; slotted or Phillips.
  4. Finish: match the hardware.

Hinge and Brass Screw Questions

Are door hinge screws #8 or #10?

Usually #9 or #10. Many interior door hinges use #9; heavier exterior hinges use #10 or #12. A #8 screw is often too thin and the head may sit below the hinge countersink.

What size are hinge screws on old or antique doors?

Old hinges were made with a wide range of screws, often slotted flat head brass. Lay the old screw on the printable chart to find its gauge and length, then order the same size and finish.

Can I use 3 inch screws for door hinges?

Yes, on the jamb side. One long screw in each hinge on an exterior door reaches the wall framing and makes the door stronger and harder to kick in. Use shorter screws on the door side so they do not go through the door edge.

How do I fix a stripped hinge screw hole?

Glue a wood dowel or a golf tee into the hole, let it dry, cut it flush, and drill a new pilot hole. Or step up to the next screw gauge or a longer screw.

Can brass screws be used outside?

Yes. Solid brass does not rust. It darkens naturally over time. Brass is softer than steel, so drill a pilot hole and use a screwdriver that fits the slot.

What screws go in door knobs and handles?

Door knobs and levers often use machine screws, not wood screws. Tell us the brand and send a photo and we will help match it, or see our brass screws.
