What is a window sill impact strip for lead paint?

An impact strip is a thin metal strip, usually aluminum or bronze, fastened to the window sill where the bottom of the sash lands. The sash closes onto metal instead of lead-painted wood.

Every time a sash slams onto a painted sill, it chips the paint and makes lead dust. That's called an impact hazard, and it's one of the most common reasons old windows fail inspection.

Two ways to fix a sill

  • Strip and refinish: remove the paint to bare wood and repaint. It's permanent and invisible.
  • Impact strip: cover the landing area with metal. It's faster and cheaper, and it covers the lead instead of removing it, so inspect it over time.

Make sure the strip lets the sash close and lock tightly, and pair it with weatherstripping so the bottom rail still seals.
