How much gap should a door have before installing interlocking weatherstripping?

A clean, even gap just under 1/8 inch around the top and sides is a common target. In very dry conditions, slightly more clearance may be appropriate because a wood door can swell later.

The goal is an even reveal and a door that moves freely before the metal is installed.
