Baldwin Mortise Lock Ordering Guide

A Baldwin mortise lock is built to fit the door it is going on.

You choose the hardware style and finish. Before the order is released, Classic Door confirms the details needed to make sure the mortise lock is set up correctly for your door.

What is the backset on a mortise lock?

Baldwin Estate mortise locks use either a 2-1/2" or 2-3/4" backset.

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the knob or lever.

Why does door thickness matter?

The thickness of the door affects the cylinder, spindle, screws, and other parts used with the mortise lock.

A standard exterior door is usually 1-3/4" thick. Thicker doors need the appropriate extended parts.

How do I determine door handing?

Door handing tells us which side the hinges are on and which way the door swings.

The four options are LH, RH, LHR, and RHR.

Does a Baldwin mortise lock use a different setup for knobs and levers?

Yes.

Baldwin mortise locks are set up differently depending on whether the door uses a knob or a lever. The lock needs to match the hardware being used.

Standard Entrance or Emergency Egress?

Standard Entrance: unlock the deadbolt before opening the door from the inside.

Emergency Egress: turning the inside knob or lever retracts the latch and deadbolt together.

Replacing an Existing Baldwin Mortise Lock?

If you are replacing an older mortise lock, do not assume the new lock will fit the same opening.

Older doors may have different holes, trim spacing, or mortise pockets. Those details should be checked before ordering replacement mortise door hardware.
