Replace Sash in an Old Double-Hung Window

You can often replace the sash in an old double-hung window without removing the entire frame.

A custom sash kit replaces the upper sash, lower sash, balances, jamb liners, and related operating parts. The existing frame, sill, and trim remain when they are sound and suitable for reuse.

What happens to the ropes and weights?

The old sash cords, pulleys, and weights do not have to remain for a sash kit to work. The new balance system takes over. If preserving the original rope-and-weight system is important, restoration of the original sash is a different path and should be discussed before ordering.

Is a sash kit the same as an insert window?

No. An insert window places a complete second frame inside the old opening. A sash kit uses the existing frame and replaces the moving sash and operating system. That can preserve more glass area and more of the original proportions.

When should you consider another solution?

A sash kit depends on a usable existing frame. Rot in the sill or jambs, movement in the opening, water damage, or unusual construction may require repair, restoration, or full-frame replacement.

What should you measure?

Do not guess at finished sash size. Start with photos and basic opening measurements. Classic Door will provide the measurement path and review the important details before made-to-order sash are released for production.

Start with photos

Send a straight-on photo from inside, a photo from outside, close views of the sill and jambs, and any visible damage. If several windows are alike, photograph one representative opening and tell us how many are in the group.
