Mortise Lock Replacement Questions

How do I replace an old mortise lock?

Remove the inside and outside handles, slide out the spindle, loosen the cylinder set screw on the door edge and unscrew the cylinder, then remove the two faceplate screws and pull the lock body out. Install the new lock body the same way in reverse.

Are all mortise locks interchangeable?

No. The new lock body must match the old one's backset, size, faceplate, and function, and be the right hand. Matching the model number is the easiest way to be sure it fits the existing hole and trim.

Should I repair or replace my mortise lock?

Often only the key cylinder or a part needs replacing. If the key will not turn, start with the mortise cylinder. If the latch, deadbolt, or handle no longer works, replace the lock body.

What is the difference between a mortise lock and a tubular lock?

A mortise lock is a rectangular box set into a pocket in the door edge, with a tall faceplate. A tubular lock fits in a round hole bored through the door and has a small latch. They are not interchangeable without changing the door.
