Replicating Historic Hardware - Part 1

Replicating Historic Hardware - Part 1

It takes a special kind of person to restore a historic property. In what can now seem like a very cookie cutter world where you can find most things online, when it comes to replicating your historic door and window hardware, it’s difficult to know where to begin.

One place to start is to decide if you want to create a completely custom set of hardware that exactly replicates what you have or if you want to try to find something already on the market that is as close as you can get. There are pros and cons to both.

Let’s start with looking at what is available already…

Pros:

  • if you are on a budget, this is a place where you can save some money

  • quicker timeline

Cons:

  • it might not ever be an exact replica

If we aren’t able to source something that meets your standards of replication, we would move on to custom fabrication…

Pros:

  • we can create hardware that matches your goal of restoring your historic home to it’s original glory

Cons:

  • the cost of completely custom hardware can be quite high due to the select amount of people who can handle these types of projects

  • it will take more time
