What causes a door to stop working properly?

These are three of the most common causes for a door to stop working properly.  We will give possible solutions to each issue.  This information is based on what we have experienced in the field over the years.

1. Misalignment

The door is misaligned, causing friction and additional issues with hardware.

Solution:  Carefully realign the door in the frame. 

2. Moisture changes

Doors swell and contract with seasonal conditions.  This can also cause the door to warp.

Solution: Maintain the paint (or varnish).  Check that the top and bottom are sealed with paint (or varnish).  This is very important!  Wood’s natural tendency is to wick moisture into the end grain.

3. Hardware 

The hardware can malfunction for a variety of reasons.  Servicing the hardware properly is a good idea.
