Should I restore or replace a classic door?

Great question!  As you may suspect, the answer can depend on the following key factors.  We hope these suggestions are helpful.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Historic Districts with zoning ordinances.

Do I live in a historic neighborhood with restrictions?  If yes, then restoration could be your only option.

Upside:  Good value.  Does not require special permitting.  And you are preserving a classic artifact!

Downside: Restoration can be more costly if the door requires structural repairs and paint work.

Determine if the door is worth repairing.

Sometimes the door is beyond repair.  More often, the door requires extensive restoration.

Upside:  Best option if you are committed to the door.

Downside: Can be labor intensive and have a higher cost than replacement.

Cost- DIY may be an option.  Consider calling a professional door service for an assessment.

Cost for restoration: $2000 - $7000 and beyond.  Does not include painting.

Replacement Options

Several door manufacturers offer installation.  While this is convenient, the installation method often requires the door surround to be removed.  This can be problematic with doors that have specialty moldings surrounding the door.  A specialty door service is a great option for replacing a door.

Cost for replacing a classic door:  $8000 - 15,000 and beyond.

Upside: A new start

Downside: May require a specialty door service to obtain best results.
